General Statement of Duties
Enhances the educational process by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning and by promoting an optimal level of wellness. Provides leadership and consultation to the principal and staff in matters pertaining to school health for all students in the facility.
- Effectively manages the health clinic by following standards of nursing practice, following procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by Student Health Services.
- Reviews, tracks, and follows-up with immunizations, conditional enrollments, and physicals of all Kindergarten and new students entering school.
- Creates cumulative health folders for new students and maintains organized, accurate, and up-to date records.
- Per protocol, collects, documents, tracks, stores and counts medications, medication forms, treatments, and medical procedures and enters into the Medication Log.
- Establish and maintain standards of emergency care to minimize the effects of accidents and illness in the school.
- Reviews, organizes, and tracks all Health History Forms, medical conditions, student clinic visits, follow-up with medical conditions, create Chronic Health Report, document students without insurance, and create a tickler file for students with emergency information.
- Provides essential delegated nursing tasks per protocol and within scope of LPN practice. Tasks include but aren’t limited to: first aid, CPR, emergency care, acute and chronic student health needs, medications administration, specialized health procedures, care for students with special education needs, screenings, health related 504 and IEP interventions, and other tasks as directed.
- Observes the health needs of students during clinic visits, screenings, chart reviews, physician referrals and other modes of communication and reports the information to the registered nurse overseeing the school.
- Collaborates with assigned registered nurse in completing assignments, reporting data, and communicating pertinent school health concerns.
- Communicates pertinent student health information to required staff in an effective verbal and/or written format, per policy.
- Refers students to health, medical, social, educational, and other resources as required within parameters established by policy, this includes but is not limited to mandated reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect, immunizations, communicable disease, and others. Treatment provided within the scope of practice per the Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations.
- Reviews, tracks, and follows-up with student health documentation on required forms, per protocol and standards of nursing practice.
- Practices effective case management per nursing standards and policy.
- Serves as a member of the school safety committee.
- Maintains a well-equipped and organized clinic.
- Assembles a substitute folder, per protocol, to be used in the absence of the school nurse.
- Coordinates, attends, and/or presents at various parent, student, and staff meetings included but not limited to “School-based Teams,” 504 Meetings, IEP Meetings, Trainings, and others as required.
- Provides care for students with chronic and severe health, emotional, social, and educational conditions.
- Assists physicians in health assessment of special education students, secures parental permission and provides follow-up.
- Trains and tracks staff on OSHA regulations, anaphylaxis, and other requirements as needed per protocol.
- Maintains appropriate OSHA standards and practices within the school setting.
- Effectively manages clinic budget.
- Maintains professional license.
- Other duties as assigned
- Regular attendance is required.
This position works 10 months / 209 days per year.
Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.

Minimum Requirements
Must hold a valid Virginia license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse and current CPR certification. Must have prior experience with child assessment and evaluation.
