General Statement of Duties
Provides educationally related occupational therapy services to students with a variety of intellectual, emotional and/or physical disabilities which impair their ability to fully benefit from their Individual Education Plan (IEP).
This professional provides therapeutic education and re-education of physical development as it pertains to muscle coordination, motor, self-help, perceptual skills, play and sensory integration and includes activities such as strengthening and developmental techniques and adaptations, fine motor techniques, sensory motor strategies, adapted handwriting curriculum, assistive technology, and activities of daily living deemed necessary for the child to be able to function as independently as possible in the school setting.
- Responsible for assessing students' physical development level and functional deficits; provide appropriate evidence-based interventions to meet the objectives of students' IEPs; provide appropriate recommendations for student accommodations, adapted equipment and assistive technology, provide instruction and training as required for school staff, students' and parents; and provide recommendations for program development.
- Assists in identifying students requiring evaluation and/or services.
- Assesses students' fine motor, self-care, development skills and sensory processing to determine functional deficits that are impacting access and participation to the specialized education program.
- Follows all LEA and VDOE guidelines regarding special education timelines for completion and submission of written evaluations.
- Maintains ongoing and up to date documentation of all services provided for compliance with various state, federal and administrative guidelines and/or Medicaid billing.
- Works cooperatively with school staff, parents and personnel in community services to assist in determining appropriate and required related service of occupational therapy.
- Provides services in the least restrictive environment with the ultimate goals of having the student able to generalize new learned skills in a variety of environments.
- Provides guidance and required information to the OT/PT technician when participating in a students' program with the therapist.
- Supervises OT or OTA students according to departmental and AOTA guidelines.
- Participates in trainings, meetings, workshops, etc.
- Assists in program planning when students receiving therapy move from one school or program to another.
- Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
- Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
- Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of Individualized Education Programs, Section 504 Plans and Services Plans when appropriate.
- Collects and analyzes data to inform as to student needs and student progress.
- Writes evaluation reports and determines educational implications of evaluation findings.
- Determines IEP objectives, frequency, type of service to be implemented, and scheduling.
- Evaluates and assesses OT treatments and makes the necessary treatment and IEP objective changes as necessary.
- Works collaboratively as part of a team.
- Makes suggestions for necessary modifications in the educational setting.
- Provides effective oral and written consultation to teachers and parents.
- Requisitions supplies and necessary equipment through the head therapist.
- Supervises and directs work of the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) as applicable.
- Provides services as multiple work sites/schools.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Regular attendance is required.
This position works 10 months, 209 days per year.
Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.

Minimum Requirements
Must have a working knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of occupational therapy in the educational setting, working knowledge of Special Education policies and procedures on the county, state and federal level, demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals and to design, write and deliver Individualized Education Plans, demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing, and demonstrated ability in decision making, problem solving, conflict resolution and data analysis.
Must hold a valid license as an Occupational Therapist issued by the Virginia Department of Health Professions, a valid Virginia Driver’s license and current First Aid, CPR & AED certification. Prior experience in a school setting is preferred.
