General Statement of Duties
Provides year-round full service care and maintenance for open spaces, park land, greens and other non-sports field properties under the purview of the Division of Recreation and Parks; properly cleans and maintains equipment; year round full-service field management, setup, marking, and repairs for all types of sports fields or greens provided for play/events Countywide; maintains greens and related areas; maintains accurate records; does related work as required.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform general grounds care: mowing, trimming, edging, leaf and debris cleanup, and snow/ice removal.
- Operate a wide variety of equipment, including lawn mowers (push, walk‑behind, riding), zero‑turn and specialty mowers, weed eaters, blowers, chainsaws, utility vehicles, tractors, and other hand/power tools.
- Clean and maintain equipment, including checking fluids and performing minor repairs on small gas‑powered tools.
- Safely drive county vehicles and transport tools, supplies, and crews.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull materials and equipment (up to 50+ pounds).
- Support cleanups after storms or other weather events and assist with special events as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed, maintenance needs, work orders, and required testing.
- Work both independently and with a team; help train temporary staff; participate in meetings and safety training.
- Follow instructions, report incidents, and complete work efficiently and safely.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Understanding of grounds maintenance and operation of landscaping tools.
- Basic knowledge and understanding of the maintenance and game setup for all types of sports fields, including natural grass, synthetic turf, and skinned infields for various sports.
- Ability to read instructions, follow plans, and maintain accurate records.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills; ability to provide good customer service.
- Able to work outdoors year‑round in all weather and perform physically demanding tasks.

Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED, and some relevant work experience preferred; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
This position requires a VA driver's license.
