General Statement of Duties

Provides professional learning to teachers, administrators, and support staff in the area of literacy for exceptional education students. Provides support with programmatic and individual educational planning for all areas of literacy.  Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations for individuals with disabilities.


Essential Duties
  • Assists in developing and delivering professional learning for  teachers in the area of literacy.
  • Facilitates and assists with literacy curriculum development using appropriate research-based teaching methodology. 
  • Actively participates with multidisciplinary teams in the development of programmatic and individual educational plans.
  • Attends eligibility and IEP meetings as requested.
  • Conducts regular school visits, observes classrooms, and provides targeted consultation and support for implementation of literacy curriculum.
  • Coordinates with principals, teachers, parents and support staff regarding the development and implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for students with literacy goals and services.  
  • Provides technical assistance in the provision of specialized instruction for students with disabilities, including available assistive technology
  • Interacts with assigned interagency personnel, professional groups, community groups, advisory committees and the staff of the Parent Resource Center.
  • Collaborates with general education literacy team
  • Assists in monitoring district progress in literacy and providing data driven guidance to stakeholders.
  • Assists in the development of plans for homebound and private day literacy instruction and transition.
  • Creates written reports and presentations at the request of the Director of Exceptional Education and supervising specialist 
  • Collaborates with department colleagues to support math instruction as needed.
  • Assists in planning, organizing, and supporting ESY services for students with academic goals
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.    
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.
  • Regular attendance is required.
Additional Information

This position works 12 months / 260 days per year.

Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.

State or Federal Funding Clause
This agreement and the continuation of this position are contingent upon the availability of specific special revenue funds.

Minimum Requirements

and other disabilities that impact literacy learning. Must have a working understanding of team consultation and how to build team consensus based on student needs and team concerns, be able to effectively participate as part of a multidisciplinary team, and be up to date on science of reading and best practices for both decoding and comprehension instruction.

Must hold a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education and have a minimum of 5 years successful teaching experience in special education and at least 3 years’ experience in the area of literacy.  Master’s degree in special education and reading specialist endorsement preferred. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
