General Statement of Duties
- The successful candidate will provide classroom and clinical instruction to high school students who are interested in entering the cosmetology or barbering profession.
- The successful candidate will ensure that daily Instruction and learning is aligned to both VDOE and State Board of Cosmetology standards/competencies
- The successful candidate will be required instruct students in Basic Cosmetology theory and manipulation skills which include hair rolling, hair pressing, thermal styling, chemical relaxing, permanent waving, shaping, finger waves, pin curling, shampooing, hair rinses, scalp treatments, facials, make-up, eyebrow arching, false eyelashes, manicuring, pedicuring, hair shaping, hair coloring, neck draping, and care of wigs that is governed by the State Board of Cosmetology, County, and CBE curriculum which enables the student to prepare for the State Board of Cosmetology Licensing examination and the world of work
Career & Technical Education Duties and Expectations
- Plans, delivers, and assesses instruction using a competency‑based education model.
- Participates in ongoing professional development to maintain current knowledge of curriculum, instructional practices, and industry trends.
- Maintains a working knowledge of current industry safety standards and ensures their incorporation into instruction.
- Supports and promotes student participation in internships and apprenticeships with local employers.
Professional Expectations:
- Plans daily instructional activities for secondary students, demonstrating knowledge of subject matter and using VDOE and State Board of Cosmetology standards/competencies and the curriculum of the district
- Uses current school and division data to plan instruction
- Develops formative and summative tests, using multiple tools to assess student learning on an ongoing basis, and alters instruction to meet group and individual needs
- Maintains order within the classroom and school with proactive classroom management and a well-organized learning environment
- Maintains records of student performance and attendance, and communicates this effectively with students and their parents
- Selects, requisitions, and uses a variety of instructional materials to stimulate learning and meet the needs of all students
- Communicates and coordinates instruction with other staff (special ed, gifted, remediation staff, etc.) relative to student learning
- Stays abreast of current educational trends and best practices as these relate to classroom instruction and effective schools
- Maintains professional manner when interacting with students, parents, patrons, community agencies and colleagues
- Sponsor an active student organization, Skills USA, and support student participate in competitions
- Incorporates and models appropriate use of technology to support instruction and student learning
- Performs other duties as assigned
- This position is for the 2026–2027 school year, with a contractual start date of July 30, 2025.
- This position works 11 months, 239 days per year.
- Annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date

Minimum Requirements
Teaching Licensure Qualifications and Eligibility
- Candidates must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) Technical Professional Teaching License in Cosmetology and Barbering.
Eligibility will be determined based on the following criteria:
- A minimum of two (2) years of full-time work experience within the past five (5) years as a cosmetologist, barber, or in a closely related field is required.
- Candidates must possess a valid Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) license as a barber and/or cosmetologist.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
