General Statement of Duties
Victim Services Specialist Intern II/III - This is an internship for academic credit for fall of 2026. The internship is designed for students pursuing careers in criminal justice, victim support, and legal support of victims.
The student will be assigned to the County of Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney's Office to support the Victim/Witness Assistance Program.
The Victim/Witness Assistance Program (V/WAP) were established in Virginia in 1984 under §9-173.3 of the code of Virginia. We help ensure that the Henrico County victims and witnesses of crime receive fair and compassionate treatment while participating in the criminal justice system. We also, to the best of our ability, ensure they receive the rights entitled to them under the Virginia Crime Victims and Witness Rights Act.
The goals of our program are to reduce the psychological trauma associated with being a victim of a crime by helping the victim with emotional support, crisis counseling, advocacy, and referrals to local social service agencies. Additionally, we can give information on the status of the case, status of the person arrested, the court system and their rights as a crime victim and address safety concerns. The legal process, frequently long and complicated, often fails to address the unique needs of victims. However, our V/WAP advocates are available to make sure that these needs are addressed.
Students must be a current student eligible to earn academic credit either as a requirement or an elective for their program to be eligible for this internship. The hiring selection and level is dependent on the qualification of the successful applicant and the needs of the County for this position.
