General Statement of Duties
Performs professional engineering work in the field and in the office for an assigned department; monitors and inspects assigned projects to ensure the completion of projects in compliance with all contract specifications and applicable local, state, and federal laws; reviews plans, permits and contracts; does related work as required.
Performs plan reviews for Public Works and Public Utilities projects for Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and all related traffic engineering sign, pavement marking, signal, and lighting needs. Attends all preconstruction meetings and progress meetings as needed, providing direction on plan-related and MOT matters. Works closely with Public Works Transportation Division in reviewing necessary studies and attending community meetings as needed.
Develops bike lane, cycle track, and related shared use path designs and coordinates directly with the Traffic Engineering Sign Shop and Signal Shop on field installation and implementation. Provides insight and guidance to Transportation Development Division on all projects that contain pedestrian, bicycle, and lighting improvements.
Maintains accurate drawings, computer designs, database records, and related information for all installed and maintained pedestrian and bike facilities. Maintains listing of locations for future installations and communicates changes in scheduling to affected stakeholders. Manages the County guardrail maintenance contract.
Researches and secures necessary materials and equipment to install various traffic control devices in a timely manner. Coordinates with shop supervisors, purchasing personnel, and outside vendors as necessary to maintain proper inventory on hand to respond to installation and maintenance needs without delay.
Assists with pedestrian safety related requests from initial customer request and response to field investigation, data and/or count collection, and device installation. Includes sidewalks, crosswalk markings, static Pedestrian signs, Flashing Pedestrian signs, All-Way Stop installations, lighting, and related safety improvements. Responsible for coordination and construction oversight through final inspection with Traffic Engineering Sign Shop and Signal Shop as applicable.
A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.
Requires possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
May require annual audio test or other job related physical testing as required by assigned position or department.
Minimum Requirements
Education: Possession of a four (4) year degree in a relevant recognized field of engineering from an ABET-accredited engineering program, and experience: Two (2) years of related professional experience in engineering; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
