General Statement of Duties
The Gifted Young Scholars Academy at L. Douglas Wilder Middle School provides a comprehensive and rigorous interdisciplinary educational opportunity for students in grades 6-8. Students must be identified gifted in the area of General Intellect to apply. In addition to mastery of foundational content and skills, students attending GYSA are expected to master advanced competencies across all content areas. The Academy will provide opportunities for leadership, inquiry-based learning, literacy and scientific analysis, service learning, arts integration, and problem-based learning that focuses on topics of strength and interest. This comprehensive instructional program is designed around the cognitive characteristics and learning styles of gifted children, providing an integrated curriculum incorporating focused reflection, interaction, and discussion.
Responsible for delivering high-quality instruction that supports students’ academic growth, critical thinking, and social‑emotional development. The teacher creates an engaging, inclusive, and safe learning environment while aligning instruction with state standards, curriculum frameworks, and school goals. This role includes planning and implementing lessons, assessing student progress, providing feedback, and collaborating with colleagues, families, and the community.
Instruction & Planning
- Develop and deliver daily lesson plans aligned with state and district standards.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
- Implement differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications to support all learners.
- Integrate technology and innovative practices into teaching to enhance student engagement.
Classroom Management
- Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and learning.
- Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Manage classroom routines to ensure safety, orderliness, and instructional time.
Assessment & Data Use
- Design formative and summative assessments to measure student learning.
- Analyze data to monitor progress, adjust instruction, and support student achievement.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate regularly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
- Participate in department meetings, team planning, and school initiatives.
- Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and support personnel as needed.
Professional Responsibilities
- Attend work daily and fulfill all assigned responsibilities.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to refine instructional practice.
- Maintain accurate records, including grades, attendance, and required documentation.
- Uphold all school and district policies, including professional and ethical standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
The minimum salary for this 10-month/ 209-day position is $59,663 with a bachelor's degree. Annual salary will be prorated based upon the actual work begin date.

Minimum Requirements
- Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in the relevant teaching area.
- Applicants with a bachelor's degree and relevant college course work and passing Praxis test scores are encouraged to apply.
- Knowledge of instructional best practices, curriculum design, and adolescent development.
- Strong skills in communication, collaboration, classroom management, and problem‑solving.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse learners and school community members.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand, sit, and move throughout the classroom and school building.
- Ability to lift or move instructional materials up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to monitor students in various settings, including classrooms, hallways, and school grounds.
