General Statement of Duties

This is a sworn position. Deputies are trained in all areas of Sheriff's Office operations and may be assigned to any unit or shift to perform any combination of duties in any of the following areas: jail security, court security, civil process, warrant services, transportation, alternative sentencing, ORBIT Program or investigations; performs related work as required.

  • Exhibit a  working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques, of   the care and custody of Inmates; have a working knowledge of mandated regulations and standards from the DCJS, DOC, ACA and PREA.
  • Be able to communicate effectively with a diverse population.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with other Public Safety agencies.
  • Be able to work a flexible schedule as necessary, which may include any or all the following; shift work, required overtime, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Exhibit a working knowledge of the Sheriff's administrative and facility operations.
  •  Exhibit a working knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, safety regulations related to facility and inmate management as well as relevant County safety and risk management policies and practices.
  • Exhibit a strong working knowledge of institutional best practices and mandated practices for the care and custody of Inmates.
  • Understand the geographical boundaries of the county regarding our jurisdictions.
  • Work productively and effectively as a team member. Present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely orally or in writing.
  • Cooperate with and accurately interpret and apply regulations and practices to inmates as needed.
  • Be able to multitask and effectively manage competing priorities. 
  • Apply critical thinking skills and be able  to problem solve and make sound decisions under pressure and in emergency and/or high risk situations.

A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.


All agency members serve at the will of the Sheriff (Elected Constitutional Officer).

You must successfully complete the Henrico County Sheriff’s Office basic training and all required training for Correctional Officers by Criminal Justice Officers Training and Standards Commission.


Post training you will be required to obtain and maintain all certifications required by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Commission (VA DCJS).


You must have a valid driver's license issued by the State of Virginia.


You must be a citizen of the United States.


This job requires a pre-employment physical examination and/or medical tests administered by Henrico County Employee Health Services.


Agency Members serve as essential personnel and may be required to work when other County closures are declared by the County Manager.


You must wear an issued uniform and adhere to the Sheriff's Office Personal Grooming Policy during working hours.


This position may be underfilled as a Jailor (ages 18-20) or as a Sheriff Deputy (age 21 and older).


The Henrico Sheriff's Office has two locations: Jail West, Henrico Va and Jail East, New Kent VA

Minimum Requirements

High school diploma or GED, and previous experience handling stressful and dangerous situations toward positive resolutions preferred; entry-level candidates may qualify without prior experience; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
