General Statement of Duties

The Medical Assistant Instructor delivers standards-driven instruction aligned with the Virginia CTE Health Science Career Cluster. This role prepares students for healthcare careers and higher education through a curriculum focused on clinical and administrative medical assisting competencies. Instruction integrates laboratory, classroom, and work-based learning to foster technical proficiency, workplace readiness, and eligibility for professional certification.



Essential Duties

Daily Duties 

  • Design and execute instructional units aligned with the Virginia CTE frameworks for Medical Assistant I & II, encompassing anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, laboratory protocols, and healthcare documentation.
  • Facilitate practical, hands-on training in clinical and administrative competencies, including patient intake, vital signs, specimen acquisition, fundamental diagnostic testing, and medical office management.
  • Incorporate authentic healthcare experiences through work-based learning pathways, clinical observations, and strategic collaboration with local healthcare entities.
  • Oversee a safe, systematic, and professional laboratory setting that adheres to strict infection control, safety mandates, and appropriate equipment maintenance protocols.
  • Embed professionalism, leadership development, and workplace readiness skills into the curriculum, promoting active participation in HOSA and other CTE student organizations.

Professional Expectations: 

  • Maintain expertise in current medical assisting protocols, healthcare technology, and industry standards, systematically integrating advancements into the instructional program.
  • Exhibit effective classroom management to engage diverse student populations across both academic theory and technical competencies.
  • Foster collaborative partnerships with school administration, CTE colleagues, and clinical partners to enhance program efficacy and expand student career opportunities.
  • Cultivate professional ethics and rigorous adherence to healthcare mandates, emphasizing confidentiality and HIPAA-compliant practices throughout the curriculum.

Essential Duties 

  • Develop and deliver daily lesson plans aligned with state and district standards.
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
  • Implement differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications to support all learners.
  • Integrate technology and innovative practices into teaching to enhance student engagement.
  • Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and learning.
  • Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Manage classroom routines to ensure safety, orderliness, and instructional time
  • Design formative and summative assessments to measure student learning.
  • Analyze data to monitor progress, adjust instruction, and support student achievement.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents.
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
  • Participate in department meetings, team planning, and school initiatives.
  • Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and support personnel as needed.
  • Attend work daily and fulfill all assigned responsibilities.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to refine instructional practice.
  • Maintain accurate records, including grades, attendance, and required documentation.
  • Uphold all school and district policies, including professional and ethical standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Information
  • This is a 10-month (209-day) position with a contractual start date of August 17, 2026. 
  • Salary will be prorated based on the official start date.

Minimum Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution OR an equivalent of academic preparation and professional experience within a health-related discipline. 
  • Valid professional licensure or certification in a healthcare field pertinent to instruction, such as Medical Assistant, Registered Nurse (RN), or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
  • Evidence of a minimum of two years of contemporary occupational experience in a healthcare environment focused on medical assisting competencies. 
  • Eligibility for, or current possession of, a Virginia CTE teaching license with the requisite Health and Medical Sciences endorsement. 
  • Industry-recognized certification aligned with the instructional area, or the commitment to secure such credentials within a specified period under a provisional framework.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
