General Statement of Duties
This position will develop, manage, deliver, and assess a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses the academic achievement, social/emotional/mental health and wellness, and college and career readiness needs of all students in grades 6-8 in alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model, ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success, and the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools.
Must have a Master’s Degree in School Counseling.
- Attends work daily and be engaged in job responsibilities.
- Helps students navigate critical and emergency situations. This includes, but is not limited to, recognizing and responding to student mental and/or behavioral health crisis; offering short-term intervention, referral and follow up; and providing Tier I, II, and III crisis counseling supports in the aftermath of a school-community emergency/crisis.
- Provides scheduled, short-term, goal-focused counseling sessions utilizing evidence-based practices (EVP) with individual students based on an identified area of need.
- Provides brief, on-demand counseling support utilizing evidence-based practices (EBP) to individual students experiencing emotional distress.
- Provides scheduled ongoing skills-based, process, or psychoeducational counseling sessions with small groups of students.
- Provides school counseling whole group lessons, sessions, and activities delivered to all students addressing the Academic, College & Career Readiness, Social/Emotional and Mental Health & Wellness domains.
- Creates and maintains the school counseling department annual calendar in alignment with the division calendar to include school-wide programming and district initiatives.
- Facilitates school-wide programming and the delivery of annual staff trainings that directly promotes or addresses an identified need in the areas of student attendance, behavior or achievement.
- Works with students to analyze their abilities, interests, skills and achievement to help them develop immediate and long-range educational, career, and personal goals.
- Assists students in exploring and pursuing educational opportunities available in the division and community and making course selections that support their educational and career goals.
- Consults with professionals inside and outside of the school building to assist in identifying and addressing barriers to student achievement. Links students and families with appropriate community services as needed.
- Participates on Intervention Team, Child Find, Eligibility, Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, Leadership Team and School Quality teams.
- Supports the Associate Principal and Principal in the development of the school-wide master schedule and completion of master schedule processes in PowerSchool.
- Provides oversight and support to the administrative support personnel and registrar in the organization and maintenance of student records/cumulative records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations.
- Collaborates with school stakeholders to design and implement support services or programs that promote student achievement, attendance, and behavior and advocate for equity and access for all students.
- Gathers/analyzes school data to create annual student outcome goals that directly support the School Quality Plan. Identifies and plans for the implementation of evidence-based practices and interventions and monitors and reports program impact on student achievement, behavior, and/or attendance regularly.
- Participates in division, state, and national professional development activities as appropriate and incorporates learning into professional practice.
- Attends monthly school counseling director meetings and reports information back in weekly/biweekly school counseling department meetings.
- Conducts annual program audit, two advisory council meetings, and a review of school counselor use of time analysis in order to assess program implementation and effectiveness and identify areas of growth and improvement.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
- This position is for the 2026–2027 school year, with a contractual start date of July 1, 2026.
- This position works 12 months, 260 days per year.
- Annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date
- This assignment is accompanied by an additional 5% stipend with a minimum pay of $3,889.

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, Henrico County Public Schools will designate select schools with high rates of vacant positions and provisionally licensed staff as Opportunity Schools. This program provides additional staffing resources and specialized professional learning as well as compensation supplements to eligible staff. Minimum Requirements
Post-graduate certification/licensure/endorsement in school counseling by the Virginia Department of Education. Master's degree with emphasis in School Counseling guidance and counseling.
