General Statement of Duties

This position is part of our County's Encore program and open only to Henrico County Police Division Police Officer retirees. Henrico Encore was established to provide a unique opportunity for dedicated employees to return to the County to fulfill a critical need. Essential Duties

Successful applicants will attend mandatory training, which will include regaining their DCJS certification as a law enforcement officer and will include field training as needed for the specific assignment.


Performs law enforcement duties and other assigned responsibilities in Henrico County. Endeavor to create a safe community. This is accomplished through a combination of law enforcement, educational, and community policing responsibilities.


Available assignments currently include:


Relief School Resource Officer (40 hours/week, following the HCPS Calendar)


  • Serve as the primary officer to respond to calls for service at their assigned school or relief area.
  • Patrol campuses regularly, maintaining high visibility to students, staff and visitors to promote a safe school environment.
  • Provide critical incident response training for school faculty and crime prevention and drug awareness education to students.
  • Participate in career fairs and community events to build trust and awareness within the school community.


Animal Protection Officer (29 hours/week)


  • Serve as the officer handling minor complaints or assisting other officers handling serious complaints.
  • Respond to ongoing calls for service to investigate, process the scene, and recover evidence.
  • Write reports for incidents not requiring intensive follow-up.
  • Engage with walk-in customers at the shelter.
  • Transport animals for veterinary care.
Additional Information

Hourly rate based on the employee's salary upon retirement.


This position follows the Henrico County General Government calendar outside the mandatory training required by the Henrico County Police Division.


Eligible applicants must be retired from the County for a minimum of six (6) months. Applicants must be a retired Henrico County employee who successfully completed their probationary period while employed in a full-time status. Available jobs assignments will vary based on the needs of the department. Successful applicants will be hired as hourly/temporary employees and will not be allowed to work hours that exceed twenty-nine (29) hours per week or 1,500 hours within a twelve-month period to allow the hourly/temporary employee to maintain VRS retirement benefits. 


Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the State of Virginia. Must be a citizen of the United States. Requires a pre-employment physical examination and/or medical tests administered by Henrico County Employee Health Services, the components of which are based on and appropriate to the specific sensory and/or physical demands of the job.  Vision requirement is uncorrected vision greater than 20/100 (20/100 must correct to 20/40 in both eyes).


Per Police Division policy, tattoos and brandings on the scalp, face (front of a person's head from the forehead to chin), and the front of the neck are prohibited.  Exceptions to this policy may be made for cosmetic tattoos and will be examined on a case by case basis. 


The Henrico County Police Division has a tobacco policy which states all sworn Police Officers shall refrain from smoking or the use of any tobacco products while on duty or off duty.


A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote,  demote, or laterally transfer an employee.

Minimum Requirements

Eligible applicants must be retired from the Henrico County Police Division as a Police Officer for a minimum of 30 days at time of application, but less than 60 months prior to the start date of this position in order to regain DCJS sworn law enforcement officer certification. (Code of Virginia §9.1-116) Eligible applicants must have successfully completed their probationary period while working full-time prior to retirement.
