General Statement of Duties
The successful candidate will support a comprehensive secondary school counseling program that promotes students’ academic, career, and personal/social development through both individual and group services. As a student advocate and a member of the educational team, the counselor will take a proactive role in supporting, influencing, and enhancing student learning. Responsibilities include consulting and collaborating with teachers, administrators, support staff, families, and community resource partners; coordinating appropriate services for students; and serving as a liaison between the school, community agencies, and post‑secondary opportunities.
Annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date
- Leads the implementation of a data-driven, comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model and in alignment with the Standards for School Counseling Programs in Virginia Public Schools and ASCA’s Student Standards.
- Provides scheduled, short-term, goal-focused counseling sessions utilizing evidence-based practices ( EBP) with individual students based on an identified area of need.
- Provides brief, on-demand counseling support utilizing evidence-based practices (EBP) to individual students experiencing emotional distress.
- Provides scheduled ongoing skills-based, process, or psychoeducational counseling sessions with small groups of students.
- Provides brief, on-demand conflict resolution and mediation to small groups of students as needed.
- Provides school counseling whole group lessons, sessions, and activities delivered to all students addressing the Academic, College & Career Readiness, Social/Emotional and Mental Health & Wellness domains.
- Creates and maintains the school counseling department’s annual calendar in alignment with the division calendar.
- Facilitates school-wide programming that directly promotes or addresses an identified need in the areas of student attendance, behavior or achievement.
- Help students navigate critical and emergency situations. This includes, but is not limited to, recognizing and responding to student mental and/or behavioral health crises; offering short-term intervention, referral and follow up; and providing Tier I, II, and III crisis counseling support in the aftermath of a school-community emergency/crisis.
- Works in collaboration with the Career Development Facilitator and Work Based Learning Coordinator to support students in analyzing their abilities, interests, skills and achievement to help them develop immediate and long-range educational, career, and personal goals
- Assists students in exploring and pursuing educational opportunities available in the division and community.
- Coordinates and facilitates the publicity, recruitment, and application efforts of the academic programs offered to include school presentations, center-wide visitations, and open houses.
- Serves as a liaison for high school counselors and students who attend the ACE Center.
- Supports students in identifying, planning for, and pursuing postsecondary opportunities.
- Consults with professionals inside and outside of the school building to assist in identifying and addressing barriers to student achievement. Links students and families with appropriate community services as needed.
- Coordinates the retrieval/dissemination of special education information between feeder high schools and ACE Center.
- Collaborates with school stakeholders to design and implement support services or programs that promote student achievement, attendance, and behavior and advocate for equity and access for all students.
- Participates in monthly Leadership Team, Safety Team, School Support Team, and other school committee meetings where the school counseling director is required.
- Gathers/analyzes school data to create annual student outcome goals that directly support the School Support Plan. Identifies and plans for the implementation of evidence-based practices and interventions and monitors and reports program impact on student achievement, behavior, and/or attendance regularly.
- Measures the action plans and outcome results of all school counseling program activities, interventions and services through a program audit and shares results as appropriate with administration and school stakeholders via the school counseling advisory committee.
- Attends monthly school counseling director meetings and reports information back to the school counseling team in weekly/biweekly school counseling department meetings.
- Participates in division, state, and national professional development activities as appropriate and incorporates learning into professional practice.
- Assists the Associate Principal and Principal in the development of the school-wide master schedule and manages all elements of the complex master schedule process in PowerSchool annually.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Must have a thorough knowledge of the curriculum, instruction, and counseling/guidance theory and practice. Counseling skills must include problem identification/analysis skills and basic therapy resolution. Communication skills, both oral and written, must be highly developed to meet the diverse needs of the clientele, professional staff, and other community agencies. Must be able to organize and carry out student activity programs; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- This position is for the 2026–2027 school year, with a contractual start date of July 1, 2025.
- This position works 12 months, 260 days per year.

- This assignment is accompanied by a large Department Chair Stipend with a minimum pay of $2,157.

Minimum Requirements
Applicant must have a post-graduate certification/licensure/endorsement in secondary school counseling by the Virginia Department of Education.
