General Statement of Duties
Coordinates all of the operating maintenance and repair activities of the school plant facility. Reads and follows manufacturer’s specifications, identifies material needs, orders material, and insures that equipment and systems related to the plant are operating appropriately, or are repaired. Plans, directs and inspects the work of custodians I and II, maintenance assistants and other personnel as assigned.
Extensive knowledge of the operating, maintenance and repair functions of a large physical plant and grounds keeping activities. Considerable knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and refrigeration systems. Ability to follow oral and written directions, to keep records, to write reports, work along side others and supervise the daily activities of skilled and semiskilled workers. Must be available to respond to emergency calls outside of work hours; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Performs scheduled inspections and routine maintenance of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
• Inspects the custodial care program daily
• Verifies proper operation of security systems, alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, etc.
• Performs or directs performance of preventive maintenance
• Supervises ice and snow removal programs as well as outside ground maintenance and grass cutting
• Operates mechanical systems such as heaters, boilers, pumps, etc.
• Performs or directs routine maintenance functions such as replacing light bulbs, toilet fixtures, glass, repairs to doors and furniture
• Replaces belts, fans, filters, and other items on installed equipment
• Performs ‟touchup” painting
• Performs overtime work on a scheduled, unscheduled, routine or emergency basis, as assigned
• Attends work daily, and is engaged and on task - regular attendance is required
• Demonstrates self-auditing safety practices and assists in supervision of employees in safety awareness procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned
This vacancy is open until filled and is available on July 1, 2026, for the 2026-27 school year. This is a 12 month, 8 hours per day, 260 days position. Minimum salary is 51,007.57 (24.52 hourly) or based on promotion policy for internal candidates. Salary is prorated based on start date.
Physical requirements: lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; walking; pushing/pulling; climbing; stooping; kneeling; bending; standing; flexibility with lower and upper body; smelling; touching; talking; stamina; hearing
Work environment may include: Noise; fumes; grease; dirt/dust; inside/outside; working alone and with others; confined areas; chemicals; repetition; hazards

Minimum Requirements
Graduation from high school or trade school and the completion of technically-based courses or training in related fields such as electricity, pneumatic controls, refrigeration, etc. A minimum of three years’ experience, preferably. Possession of a valid operator’s license issued by the State of Virginia. (Commercial Driver’s License – Class B required for elementary school zones.)
