General Statement of Duties
Provides a comprehensive school counseling program addressing academic, career, and personal/social development for students through individual and group contacts. As a student advocate and as a member of the educational team, participates in a proactive manner to support, impact and enhance student learning. Consults and collaborates with teachers, administrators, support staff, families, and community resource persons; coordinates appropriate services for students, and serves as a liaison between school, community agencies and post-secondary opportunities.
• Provides academic counseling to assist students and their parents in acquiring knowledge of the curricular choices available to students and to plan a program of studies.
• Provides career counseling to help students acquire information and plan action about work, jobs, apprenticeships, and post- secondary educational and career opportunities.
• Provides personal/social counseling to assist students to develop an understanding of themselves, the rights and needs of others, how to resolve conflict; and to define individual goals, reflecting their interests, abilities, and aptitudes.
• Conducts academic, career, and personal/social classroom guidance lessons
• Conducts academic, career, and personal/social group counseling sessions
• Serves a vital role in maximizing student achievement, social and career development.
• Serves as an advocate for the student.
• Serves as a resource for students, parents/guardians, administrators and school staff.
• Conducts school-wide programs specific to the needs of individual schools.
• Collaborates/consults with parents, teachers, and administrators and school community resources concerning student issues.
• Coordinates teacher and parent conferences
• Serves as a member of the Child Study, Eligibility, IEP, and Gifted Identification committees.
• Serves as case manager for students who have 504 Plans.
• Assists students and parents with transitional tasks and issues.
• Provides test preparation instruction for students.
• Interprets test data for students, parents, and teachers.
• Maintains and updates student cumulative records.
• Supports the total school community by serving on school and division committees.
• Assists with crisis intervention.
• Provides information to students and parents regarding student opportunities such as enrichment programs, scholarships, special programs, etc.
• Performs other duties as required.
This position has a 220-day contract with an August 10, 2026 start date. The minimum salary for this 220-day position is $65,818 with a master's degree. Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, Henrico County Public Schools will designate select schools with high rates of vacant positions and provisionally licensed staff as Opportunity Schools. This program provides additional staffing resources and specialized professional learning as well as compensation supplements to eligible staff. Minimum Requirements
- Post-graduate certification/licensure/endorsement in Elementary, Middle, or Secondary Counselor or School Counselor PK-12 by the Virginia Department of Education.
- Master's Degree with emphasis in guidance and/or school counseling.
