General Statement of Duties

Develops, plans, leads, and/or supervises the administration of specialized recreational, interpretative, or educational programs and related activities in assigned locations; coordinates logistics and resources; ensures compliance with safety standards; performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties

The Recreation Coordinator I – Visual Arts Programming is responsible for comprehensive creative arts-based recreation programming throughout Henrico County, serving participants of all ages and backgrounds. This position is responsible for developing, coordinating, and delivering engaging visual arts activities, ensuring they are accessible and meaningful to diverse community members. Additional duties include managing budgets, overseeing the procurement and organization of supplies, maintaining a well-equipped art studio, and spearheading collaborative community art projects, fostering creativity and cultural connection across the county. As the subject matter expert, this entry-level position will serve as a supportive resource to both staff and community partners, offering guidance, mentorship, and expertise in creative arts program development and implementation.

  • Plan, implement, coordinate, schedule, and supervise a variety of visual arts recreation programs and services.
  • Strong foundation in multiple visual arts mediums to include but not limited to, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, ceramics, print making, stained glass, fused glass, etc.  
  • Supervise part-time, seasonal, and contractual recreation leaders and volunteers in delivering creative arts programs.
  • Ability to lead and teach a wide variety of visual arts programs for all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to lead and teach additional programming and camps as needed.
  • Identify staff training needs and coordinate training sessions and in-service programs.
  • Promote public awareness of creative arts programs through outreach and community engagement.
  • Lead, design, and initiate community-based art projects as needed.
  • Collaborate with community groups, agencies, and stakeholders to coordinate and enhance program offerings.
  • Provide program and facility coverage as needed, working flexible hours including days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.
  • Maximize use of the Division’s Studio at the Springs by developing a wide range of high‑quality visual arts programs.
  • Preferred proficiency in kiln operations to offer a variety of pottery and fused glass programs
  • Ensure safe operations of all studio equipment and adherence to safety protocols (Kilns, glass cutters, pottery wheel, etc.)
  • Collaborate with team members as needed to lead and offer assistance for additional creative arts offerings
Additional Information
  • Provide program and facility coverage as needed, working flexible hours including days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays
  • First Aid, CPR, AED and other fitness and department specific certifications may be required
  • Must be able to lift at least 30 lbs. as needed to move supplies and equipment
  • Requires valid driver's license

Minimum Requirements

Four (4) year degree in recreation or other field relevant to assignment and some relevant work experience preferred; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
