General Statement of Duties

The Duty-Free Lunch Assistant supports school staff by supervising students during lunch periods, allowing teachers uninterrupted duty-free time for planning and rest. This role ensures a safe, orderly, and positive environment in the cafeteria, playground, or designated lunch areas.

This position will work approximately 2.5 hours per day, not to exceed 29 hours per week.  Schedule will be assigned by the principal.


Essential Duties
  • Supervise students during lunch periods in designated areas (cafeteria, playground, or classrooms).
  • Maintain a safe and respectful environment by enforcing school rules and behavior expectations.
  • Monitor student conduct and promote positive social interactions.
  • Assist students with opening food containers, managing spills, and basic needs when necessary.
  • Respond to minor incidents and report concerns or disciplinary issues to appropriate staff.
  • Ensure students clean up after themselves and maintain cleanliness of lunch areas.
  • Facilitate transitions to and from lunch, including lining up and dismissal procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers and school administration regarding any issues or observations.
  • Regular attendance is required.

Minimum Requirements

Must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or equivalent.  Must be able to manage groups of students in a calm and respectful manner.

Experience working with children in a school is preferred. 

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
