General Statement of Duties
SUBSTITUTE BUS ASSISTANT : AREA 1 - 5. The employee in this classification assists with the safe transportation of students with special needs to and from school and school-related activities by providing assistance to the school bus driver; securing passengers in their seats; and assisting students that board and leave the school bus. The employee also interacts with students, allowing the driver to focus more on safe driving practices and traffic conditions.
Assists with the safe transportation of students with special needs, secures students in their seats and assists students when boarding and exiting the bus.
• Assists students on and off of the school bus and during the bus ride as necessary. This may include attending to individual special needs of students to ensure their safety and comfort.
• Ensures that all students are properly secured in their safety vest or wheelchair as required by the students Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
• Assists in controlling student behavior
• Assists bus driver in conducting bus evaluation drills
• Assists the driver in maintaining the cleanliness of the interior of the bus
• Learns the bus route, schedule and bus stops
• Keeps abreast of route and bus stop changes
• Performs related work as assigned.
Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.

Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent. Minimum age for employment is 18 years old. Ability to use and display patience, sensitivity and understanding to students who have special needs. Must complete the pre-employment training course offered by the Department of Pupil Transportation in order to become a bus assistant.
