General Statement of Duties
Henrico County Public Schools is seeking dedicated and professional School Security Officers (SSOs) to help maintain a safe, secure, and respectful learning environment. SSOs play a vital role in crime prevention, enforcement of school policies, and serve as a visible presence that supports the school’s culture of safety. In alignment with state requirements, all SSOs are responsible for the safety, security, and welfare of students, staff, and visitors on school property.
• Serve as a visible presence to promote safety and security
• Collaborate with administrators and staff to support a safe school climate
• Patrol hallways, classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, playgrounds, and school perimeters
• Ensure all interior and exterior doors remain shut and locked
• Prevent unauthorized access to school grounds
• Operate security equipment, including weapon scanners
• Report issues with security systems, protocols, or procedures
• Assist with arrival and dismissal
• Respond promptly to incidents, emergencies, and alarm activations
• Model appropriate behavior and encourage academic and social engagement
• Use de-escalation strategies and approved techniques (MANDT & DCJS)
• Escort students as needed
• Investigate student violations of school policy
• Refer students to the administration when appropriate
• Assist the administration in searches when reasonable suspicion has been established
• Report criminal activity to the appropriate school officials or authorities
• Detain students in violation of the law until law enforcement and administration arrive
• Render first aid and CPR as appropriate
• Maintain strict confidentiality in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA
• Collaborate with School Resource Officers (SROs) and emergency personnel
• Commitment to confidentiality and professionalism
• Serve as a member of the school safety team
• Review, understand, and assist in implementing emergency procedures as outlined in the school's safety plan.
• Attend safety and staff meetings
• Maintain regular attendance, punctuality, and engagement
• Wear the assigned uniform and ID badge at all times
• Record incidents and complete written reports as needed
• Offer testimony in court or before the school board as needed
• Attend mandatory training as required by state requirements
• Participate in school events in line with SSO duties
• Attends work daily and be engaged in job responsibilities
• Performs other duties as assigned
Assigned location: Nuckols Farm Elementary School
This is a 200 day/8 hour per day position. Annual salary will be prorated based upon actual work begin date.

Minimum Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must be at least 21 years of age
• Ability to respond to emergencies, incidents, or safety needs throughout the workday
• Basic computer skills with the ability to use typical business software. Examples: Google Docs, Word, Outlook.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• One (1) year of experience in security or public service preferred, or equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Desire and experience to work with students, staff, law enforcement, and community members.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Virginia DCJS School Security Officer Certification within 60 days. (training provided by HCPS) Must be at least 21 years of age
• Ability to obtain and maintain a MANDT Certification and AED/First Aid/CPR certification within the first year of employment. (training provided by HCPS).
