General Statement of Duties
Under the guidance of the Exceptional Education teacher, provides instructional or behavioral support to allow special education students to achieve instructional or behavioral goals and objectives for students in a public separate program.
- Under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher the Instructional Assistant:
- Provides one on one or small group instruction to students
- Assists with classroom management and behavior modification
- Assists with field trips, community-based instruction, and other activities
- Assists students with personal care tasks, including but not limited to, hygiene, diapering, toileting and wash-up routines
- Assists students with mobility needs such as, lifting and positioning students, lifting in and out of wheelchairs; and loading and unloading the bus and operates adaptive equipment
- Collects data on student performance and progress
- Assists with creation, organization, and distribution of instructional materials
- Reports student concerns directly and promptly to the teacher and assists with student resolution
- Assist with implementation of behavior management plans
- Assists with breakfast, lunch and snack, including clean-up
- May be required to assist with student’s medical needs
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Regular attendance is required
This position works 241 days per year, 7.25 hours per day.
Annual salary will be prorated based upon the work begin date.

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, Henrico County Public Schools will designate select schools with high rates of vacant positions and provisionally licensed staff as Opportunity Schools. This program provides additional staffing resources and specialized professional learning as well as compensation supplements to eligible staff. Minimum Requirements
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in special education classrooms; ability to maintain records and confidentiality; ability to operate audio visual, standard office and computer equipment; ability to operate adaptive equipment; and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and administrators.
Must be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
