General Statement of Duties

The Coordinator of Outdoor Learning is an instructional leader and member of the Teaching and Learning Living Building Team, responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum-aligned outdoor learning experiences that support Henrico County Public Schools’ Environmental Education Living Building (EELB) programming.

In collaboration with the Environmental Science Education Specialist, the Coordinator designs and delivers standards-aligned outdoor instruction, supports teachers in implementing outdoor learning, provides professional development, and promotes equitable access to meaningful, place-based learning experiences. The Coordinator also provides direct student instruction, models effective instructional practices, and supports the integration of environmental literacy across content areas.

The Coordinator works closely with the Varina Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability (VCESS) Specialty Center Director to coordinate facility use and programming that supports both school and division priorities. The position may also develop and deliver instructional programming beyond scheduled Living Building experiences.

Essential Duties
  • Designs, implements, and evaluates curriculum-aligned outdoor learning experiences that support Virginia Standards of Learning and HCPS instructional priorities.
  • Provides direct instruction to students participating in Environmental Education Living Building (EELB) programs and other outdoor learning experiences.
  • Collaborates with the Environmental Science Education Specialist to develop, refine, and continuously improve outdoor learning curriculum, instructional resources, and student experiences.
  • Models effective instructional strategies, place-based learning practices, and environmental literacy integration for classroom teachers.
  • Provides professional learning, coaching, and instructional support to teachers related to outdoor learning and environmental education.
  • Collaborates with teachers to connect outdoor learning experiences to classroom instruction and support student learning before, during, and after EELB experiences.
  • Assesses program effectiveness and student learning outcomes using participation, feedback, and performance data to inform program improvements.
  • Collaborates with teachers to provide instructional programming for classes outside of common experience programming, when scheduling allows.
  • Coordinates logistics for common-experience programming, including scheduling, transportation, instructional materials, and risk-management procedures.
  • Works in partnership with the Varina Center for Environmental Studies and Sustainability (VCESS) Specialty Center Director to align scheduling, facility use, and resource sharing at the Living Building.
  • Serves as a point of support for Outdoor Learning Instructional Assistants, ensuring they have the resources, training, and guidance needed to effectively support instruction.
  • Leads programming directly when Outdoor Learning Instructional Assistants are absent or when additional instructional support is needed.
  • Maintains strong communication and collaboration with teachers, school administrators, and community partners to support outdoor learning initiatives.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of summer programming at the EELB.
  • Ensures safe and effective use of outdoor learning spaces, facilities, and equipment.
  • Attends work daily and is actively engaged in job responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Additional Information
  • This is a 12-month (260-day) position with a contractual start date of July 1, 2026. 
  • Salary will be prorated based on the official start date.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must hold a valid VDOE teaching license with an endorsement in a science‑related field, including Middle Education 6–8 Science, Biology, or Earth and Space Science, or an endorsement in Agriculture Education or Elementary Education PreK–6.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience in a K-12 educational or outdoor learning setting required.
  • Experience providing direct instruction to students in classroom, outdoor, field-based, or experiential learning environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with teachers, administrators, and community partners to support student learning.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
