The selected individual(s) will: 

• Facilitate all Section 504 processes within assigned school(s), including referrals, eligibility determinations, plan development, annual reviews, and Manifestation Determination Reviews (MDRs), ensuring full procedural and documentation compliance.
• Support the development and implementation of legally compliant, student-centered 504 Plans, translating mental health and medical evaluations into appropriate, effective school-based accommodations and supports.
• Collaborate closely with school-based mental health teams, including school psychologists, school social workers, school counselors, school nurses, and administrators, as well as community and outside mental health providers, to coordinate comprehensive support for students with mental health and health-related disabilities.
• Identify students whose mental health needs may warrant Section 504 consideration and ensure timely, responsive interventions that promote access to education and student success.
• Coordinate and help support crisis prevention/intervention, re-entry planning, and continuity of care for students (with 504s or possibly in need of a 504) returning from hospitalization or experiencing significant mental health challenges.
• Conducts classroom observations and gathers relevant data for students with active 504 Plans and for students referred for consideration of 504 eligibility, in order to inform evaluation, planning, and ongoing progress monitoring.
• Provide consultation and guidance to teachers and administrators regarding mental health accommodations, trauma-informed practices, and SEL-aligned supports within the school setting for students with a 504 plan.
• Serve as the primary school liaison for families regarding mental health accommodations and Section 504 supports, offering clear communication, guidance on support pathways, and connections to school-based and community mental health resources.
• Engage in proactive, collaborative problem-solving with families and school teams to reduce conflict, strengthen partnerships, and ensure students’ needs are addressed effectively.
• Attend and actively participate in professional learning, trainings, and staff development activities related to assigned responsibilities, job expectations, and applicable laws, regulations, and best practices.

• This is a 12-month (260-day) position with a contractual start date of July 1, 2026. 
• Salary will be prorated based on the official start date.

Required: 

Current Post-graduate certification/licensure/endorsement in school counseling by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). 

Master's degree with emphasis in School Counseling guidance and counseling.  

Preferred Requirements 

• Demonstrated experience supporting students with mental health needs, particularly at the secondary level. 
• Strong existing knowledge of Section 504 coordination at the middle and/or high school level, or strong knowledge of Section 504 requirements with a willingness to receive specialized training. 
• Familiarity with trauma-informed practices and their application in school settings. 
• Experience collaborating with community mental health providers and external agencies to support student needs. 
• Strong counseling skills, including problem identification, analysis, and basic therapeutic resolution strategies. 
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills to effectively engage students, families, professional staff, and community partners. 
• Demonstrated ability to organize and implement student support activities and programs. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
