General Statement of Duties

Engages directly in firefighting, rescue, fire prevention, equipment operation and maintenance, fire station maintenance, community service, training activities or EMS functions in the Division of Fire; does related work as required.

Essential Duties

The Division of Fire is a community-driven, professional public safety and service organization that takes PRIDE in stewardship and public trust.  For more information on being a part of the County of Henrico Division of Fire teamer. 


The Henrico Division of Fire is seeking qualified applicants, with or without experience, to become firefighting professionals. Firefighter duties include: engaging directly in firefighting, rescue, fire prevention, equipment operation and maintenance, fire station maintenance, community service, training activities or EMS functions in the Division of Fire; does related work as required. The Division of Fire serves the community from twenty-three strategically located community firehouses staffed by over 650 highly trained and certified firefighters. All field personnel are state certified firefighters and certified to the Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) level. The Division currently has on duty each day 23 engines, 22 transport units, 6 ladder trucks, 3 heavy rescue companies, 3 EMS supervisors, 3 battalion chiefs, a shift safety captain, and a shift commander. The Division of Fire also operates numerous specialty equipment available each day. Utilizing the above staff and equipment the following services are provided:  urban and rural fire services and response; emergency medical advanced life support services and transport; specialized teams (HAZMAT, technical rescue, dive/swift water); fire prevention, education, and investigations; response and recovery to natural and man-made disasters.


Requirements for applicants WITHOUT previous experience:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application and have completed high school at time of hire.
  • Selected applicants will attend a fire academy of approximately 24-weeks in length before being assigned to field operations.


Applicants without experience will receive a starting annual pay rate of $64,038. 


Selected applicants will be eligible to enter the Division of Fire's career development program which may increase the pay rate over the first several years of the member's career.

Applicants who successfully meet the requirements for this position will be invited to take a written test.  


A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee.


An applicant may be disqualified if his/her driving record reflects: an accumulation of more than six Department of Motor Vehicle demerit points within the last twelve (12) months; or more than two (2) moving violation convictions within the last twelve (12) months; or a DUI conviction within the last twelve (12) months.


Must submit to a battery of pre-employment tests (written and physical strength/agility). Must be eligible for and successfully complete a Commonwealth of Virginia EMT-B Certification course as part of the Division of Fire Recruit Academy. Requires a pre-employment physical examination and/or medical tests and substance-abuse tests administered by Henrico County Employee Health Services or their contractors, the components of which are based on and appropriate to the specific sensory and/or physical demands of the position.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from high school; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Must also be at least eighteen (18) years of age and possess a valid driver's license.
