General Statement of Duties
To manipulate heavy motor equipment with constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents. This class differs from that of Equipment Operator I because of the high degree of skill required and the greater consequences of error in the form of damage to more expense equipment. Supervision may be exercised over designated workers.
• Operates backhoes, skid steer loaders, tractors and dump trucks
• Operates a grader in shaping and maintaining road surfaces.
• Operates a front-end loader
• Operates a variety of heavy equipment in cleaning and removing snow from roads and streets
• Operates a tandem truck, towing backhoe/loader and trailer
• Operates a street sweeper
• Supervises and plans the work for a small crew of semi-skilled and unskilled workers
• Performs overtime work and other duties as assigned
• Demonstrates self auditing safety practices and assists in supervision of employees in safety awareness and procedures
• Attends work daily and is engaged and on-task - regular attendance is required
• Performs other duties as assigned
• Operates a tar kettle used in road maintenance
• Operates a heavy roller as part-time or seasonal assignment
This vacancy is open until filled and is available for the 26-27SY. This is a 12 month, 8 hours per day, 260 day position. Minimum salary is $48,671.23 ($23.40 hourly) or based on promotion policy for internal candidates. Salary is prorated based on official start date. Work hours are 7:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Minimum Requirements
Completion of grade school, one year of experience operating heavy automotive equipment; preferably has some supervisory experience. Must have valid commercial license issued by the State of Virginia. Some positions may require a Class A endorsement. Must have skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of automotive equipment; may require knowledge of standard practices, methods and materials used in street or utility construction and maintenance activities. Ability to work at high altitudes.
