General Statement of Duties
The Surgical Technologist Instructor provides classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction to high school students enrolled in Surgical Technologist I and II programs within the Health Science Career Cluster. Instruction is designed to prepare students with the knowledge, technical skills, and professional competencies required to assist in surgical procedures.
The instructor delivers comprehensive instruction in areas including anatomy, medical terminology, aseptic technique, surgical procedures, patient safety, and operating room protocols, while integrating leadership development and work-based learning experiences aligned with Virginia Career and Technical Education (CTE) standards.
Instructional Delivery and Competency Mastery
- Provide comprehensive instruction aligned with Virginia CTE Surgical Technologist I & II competencies, focusing on human anatomy, physiology, and specialized surgical procedures.
- Deliver curriculum on the principles of asepsis, sterile technique, stringent infection control protocols, operating room safety, and best practices in patient care.
- Facilitate hands-on laboratory experiences and simulated surgical environments to master instrument identification and handling. Ensure the maintenance of a safe and compliant lab.
- Supervise and coordinate clinical and work-based learning experiences through partnerships with healthcare providers to facilitate the real-world application of technical skills.
- Integrate HOSA (Future Health Professionals) activities and leadership development initiatives into the instructional framework.

- Model and promote the highest standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, effective communication, and collaborative teamwork as expected within the healthcare industry.
- Foster and support an environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion across all classroom, laboratory, and clinical instructional settings.
- Collaborate effectively with CTE administrators, school counselors, and program advisory committees to ensure rigorous program quality and regulatory compliance.
Essential Duties
- Develop and deliver daily lesson plans aligned with state and district standards.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
- Implement differentiated instruction, accommodations, and modifications to support all learners.
- Integrate technology and innovative practices into teaching to enhance student engagement.
- Establish and maintain clear expectations for behavior and learning.
- Create a positive, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Manage classroom routines to ensure safety, orderliness, and instructional time
- Design formative and summative assessments to measure student learning.
- Analyze data to monitor progress, adjust instruction, and support student achievement.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to students and parents.
- Communicate regularly and professionally with students, families, and colleagues.
- Participate in department meetings, team planning, and school initiatives.
- Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, and support personnel as needed.
- Attend work daily and fulfill all assigned responsibilities.
- Participate in ongoing professional development to refine instructional practice.
- Maintain accurate records, including grades, attendance, and required documentation.
- Uphold all school and district policies, including professional and ethical standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- This is a 10-month (209-day) position with a contractual start date of August 17, 2026.
- Salary will be prorated based on the official start date.

Minimum Requirements
- Possess or maintain eligibility for a Virginia Technical Professional License with the appropriate Health Occupations or Career and Technical Education (CTE) endorsement.
- Maintain current industry-recognized certification in surgical technology (e.g., CST) as required for CTE instructional licensure.
- Verify completion of an accredited surgical technology program.
- Demonstrate a minimum of two (2) years of successful, recent clinical expertise in surgical technology; experience in hospital or outpatient surgical settings is highly preferred.
- Demonstrate professional proficiency and comprehensive knowledge in surgical procedures and standardized operating room protocols.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues.
